HELPFUL HINTS
Some of the first things you will need to know about your room are the dimensions. If you are building, your builder or architect can provide you with a set of plans. These plans provide all the information you will need.
If you are remodeling, measure your space carefully, create a sketch of the room, and note the location of all the appliances, plumbing, electrical outlets, light switches, windows and doors. When measuring, include the outside or finished dimensions of every item in the room.

We recommend that you print out our kitchen layout forms which will assist you in measuring your kitchen.
MEASURING YOUR KITCHEN ACCURATELY
Measure the height and width of all walls and record each measurement in the Wall Measurement Sheet.

Now take detailed width measurements:
Start at the corner and measure to the edge of the nearest opening (not including any trim).
Measure across the inside of the opening.
Measure from the second side of the opening to the next opening or wall corner.
Repeat across the entire wall. Add up the measurements and make sure that they agree with the overall wall width.
Now take detailed height measurements:
Measure from floor to the bottom of each window or the top of each door.
Measure from the top of the window or door to the ceiling.
Measures until all the opening heights are recorded.
Make sure each set of measurements agrees with the overall wall height.
MAKE A ROUGH SKETCH OF YOUR ROOM

Start with a rough drawing of the shape of the room
Draw the shape of your room, and add doors, windows, breaks in the wall. Indicate in which direction doors swing and where they lead.
When measuring doors and windows, the trim is considered part of the door or window.
As shown in the drawing below, measure from the outside of the trim on one side to the outside of the trim on the other side.
Mark the location of all items and obstacles
Show the location of all electrical outlets, wall switches, lighting fixtures, plumbing and gas connections.
Measure the dimensions of the appliances and fixtures that you plan to keep.
Begin sketching your ideas for placement of cabinetry and major appliances.
